Etymology
Probably of onomatopoeic origin. From მაი (mai) ← მაარი (maari), მაჲარე (mayare) ← მაყაყი (maqaqi). Intervocalic რ (r) regularly disappears in Laz. As a result, an epenthetical consonant ჲ (y) may be substituted. Forms with რ (r) are the result of hypercorrection. Akin to Georgian ბაყაყი (baq̇aq̇i).
