მაი

Laz

Alternative forms

Etymology

Probably of onomatopoeic origin. From მაი (mai)მაარი (maari), მაჲარე (mayare)მაყაყი (maqaqi). Intervocalic (r) regularly disappears in Laz. As a result, an epenthetical consonant (y) may be substituted. Forms with (r) are the result of hypercorrection. Akin to Georgian ბაყაყი (baq̇aq̇i).
