Etymology

According to Fähnrich, a reduplication of *თურ- (*tur-), from Proto-Kartvelian *tur-. Cognate with Svan თუ̂ირ (tûir, steam, vapour).[1]

Compare also Mingrelian თილთილი (tiltili, forst, hoar frost) (from Georgian?).
