From Old Georgian ვეშაპი (vešaṗi), ultimately an Iranian borrowing. Compare Avestan 𐬬𐬌𐬱𐬁𐬞𐬀 (višāpa, “an epithet of a dragon”) and Old Armenian վիշապ (višap).
