From Old Georgian ვეშაპი (vešaṗi), ultimately an Iranian borrowing. Compare Avestan 𐬬𐬌𐬱𐬁𐬞𐬀 (višāpa, an epithet of a dragon) and Old Armenian վիշապ (višap).
