From Proto-Tai *paːwᴮ (to announce), from Middle Chinese (MC pawH, “to announce”). Cognate with Thai ป่าว (bpàao) Northern Thai ᨸ᩵ᩣ᩠ᩅ, Lao ປ່າວ (pāo), ᦔᦱᧁᧈ (ṗaaw¹), Tai Dam ꪜ꪿ꪱꪫ, Tai Nüa ᥙᥣᥝᥱ (pǎaw), Phake ပွ် (paw), Ahom 𑜆𑜨𑜧 (pow), Zhuang bauq.
