Etymology
From ချွေး (hkywe:, “sweat”) + -မ (-ma., feminine suffix), with the former element from Proto-Tibeto-Burman *krwəy (“son-in-law, daughter-in-law”). Can be decomposed to literally mean “sweat woman,” in reference to the subordinate status of the daughter-in-law living with her in-laws. Cognate with Sichuan Yi ꑮꃀ (xyp mop, “daughter-in-law”), Lolopo cirmu (“daughter-in-law”).
