ချွေးမ

Burmese

Etymology

From ချွေး (hkywe:, sweat) + -မ (-ma., feminine suffix), with the former element from Proto-Tibeto-Burman *krwəy (son-in-law, daughter-in-law). Can be decomposed to literally mean “sweat woman,” in reference to the subordinate status of the daughter-in-law living with her in-laws. Cognate with Sichuan Yi ꑮꃀ (xyp mop, daughter-in-law), Lolopo cirmu (daughter-in-law).
