From Proto-Mon-Khmer *wa(a)ŋ (enclosure).[1] Cognate with Thai เวียง (wiiang), Northern Thai ᩅ᩠ᨿᨦ (wiang), Shan ဝဵင်း (wáeng).

Khmer វៀង (viəng, city, metropolis, capital) is reborrowed from Thai or Lao "wiang".
