- The diacritical mark called "mai ek" - ไม้เอก (mái-èek): it is the first of the Thai language's four tone marks. For the low initial consonant class (of syllables), the mai ek implies a falling tone. For the mid and the high initial consonant classes, the mai ek implies a low tone.
