From Proto-Southwestern Tai *pʰɛːnᴮ¹ (“classifier of boards, flat objects, etc.”), from Middle Chinese 片 (MC phenH). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨹᩯ᩠᩵ᨶ, Lao ແຜ່ນ (phǣn), Tai Dam ꪵꪠ꪿ꪙ, Shan ၽႅၼ်ႇ (phèn), Tai Nüa ᥚᥦᥢᥱ (phǎen), Ahom 𑜇𑜢𑜐𑜫 (phiñ).
