Etymology

From Sanskrit आश्चर्य (āścarya, astonishment; miracle; surprise); probably via Angkorian Old Khmer ʼaścāryya (marvel, wonder; marvellous, wondrous). Cognate with Old Khmer iscāryya, isacāryya, isacaryya; Modern Khmer អស្ចារ្យ (ʼɑhcaa); Lao ອັດສະຈັນ (ʼat sa chan). Doublet of อัจฉริยะ (àt-chà-rí-yá).
