From Pali asani (“thunderbolt”), ultimately from Sanskrit अशनी (aśanī). Compare Old Khmer ʼasuni, ʼaśūni, from which Thai อสุนี is possibly derived. Cognate with Modern Khmer អសនី (ʼaʼsaʼnii).
