Etymology
From Sanskrit अभय (abhaya, “absence or removal of fear; security; safety; protection from fear or danger; giving safety; etc.”) or Pali abhaya (“ibid.”). Cognate with Khmer អភ័យ (ʼaʼphɨy, “fearlessness; indulgence; forgiveness; to pardon; to forgive”) and Lao ອະໄພ (ʼa phai, “to forgive; to pardon; safety; security; pardon; forgiveness”). Equivalent to อ (ɔɔ, “no; not; without”) + ภัย (pai, “fear; danger”).
