From Sanskrit सङ्क्रान्ति (saṅkrānti, the passage of a planet from one position to another). Compare Khmer សង្ក្រាន្ត (sɑngkraan); Khün ᩈᩘᨠᩕᩣ᩠ᨶ; ᦉᧂᦃᦱᧃ (ṡangẋaan).
