From Pali vivāda (“dispute; controversy; contention; contest; etc”); ultimately from Sanskrit विवाद (vivāda, idem); possibly via Old Khmer vivāta (“to quarrel; to differ (with); etc”). Cognate with Thai พิพาท (pí-pâat), Lao ວິວາດ, Modern Khmer វិវាទ (viviət).
