Etymology
From ยักษ์ (yák, “yakṣa, a malevolent mythological creature”) + มักกะสัน (“Makassar”); literally "yakṣa of Makassar", believed to originally refer to a group of Muslim refugees from Makassar who committed an unsuccessful coup, known as Makassar Insurrection, against King Narai of Ayutthaya in 2229 BE (1686/87 CE).
