From Proto-Southwestern Tai *pʰuəᴬ (“husband”), from Middle Chinese 夫 (MC pju). Cognate with Ahom 𑜇𑜥 (phū), Lao ຜົວ (phūa), Lü ᦷᦕ (ṗho), Northern Thai ᨹ᩠ᩅᩫ, Khün ᨹ᩠ᩅᩫ, Shan ၽူဝ် (phǒ).
