From Pali paṭivatti (literally “rolling back; turning back”), from paṭi (“back; against”) + vatti (“rolling; turning”); equivalent to Thai ปฏิ (bpà-dtì) + วัติ. Cognate with Khmer បដិវត្តន៍ (pa’de’voat), Lao ປະຕິວັດ.
