From Sanskrit त्रिशूल (triśūla, “trident”); probably via Old Khmer triśūla (“trident; three-pronged finial at the top of a temple tower.”). Compare Modern Khmer ត្រីសូល៍ (treisol៍), ត្រៃសូរ (traysou).
