From Proto-Southwestern Tai *ɣumꟲ² (“to cover; to protect”). Cognate with Lao ຄຸມ (khum), Shan ၵုမ်း (kúm), Ahom 𑜀𑜤𑜪 (kuṃ). Doublet of คุ้ม (kúm), คลุม (klum), and กุม (gum).
