From Proto-Tai *ɢaːnᴬ. Cognate with Northern Thai ᨣᩤ᩠ᨶ, Khün ᨣᩤ᩠ᨶ, Lao ຄານ (khān), ᦅᦱᧃ (kaan), Shan ၵၢၼ်း (káan), Tai Nüa ᥐᥣᥢᥰ (käan), Phake ကꩫ် (kan), Ahom 𑜀𑜃𑜫 (kan), Nong Zhuang ganz. Compare Middle Chinese 竿 (MC kan) or Old Chinese 竿 (OC *kaːn).
