Inherited from Proto-Dravidian *cōṭam (“boat”). Cognate with Omani Arabic هوري (“hōrī”), Kannada ಓಡ (ōḍa), Gujarati હોડી (hoḍī), Tamil ஓடம் (ōṭam), Tigre ሆሪ (hori), Telugu ఓడ (ōḍa), Tulu ಓಡ (ōḍa), Dhivehi އޮޑި (oḍi), Marathi होडी (hoḍī), Sanskrit होड (hoḍa) and Swahili hori. Doublet of ഓടി (ōṭi).
