Etymology
Inherited from Proto-South Dravidian I *eḷ-ney (“sesame oil/ghee”), later got a semantic generalization to just mean "oil", also seen among cognates Tamil எண்ணெய் (eṇṇey), Malayalam എണ്ണ (eṇṇa). A similar process is also observed independently with Telugu నూనె (nūne) and Sanskrit तैल (taila).
