From మాట్లాడు (māṭlāḍu), ultimately from Proto-Dravidian *māṯ(ṯ/-tt-) (“changed, altered”), whence మారు (māru), మార్పు (mārpu). Cognate with Kannada ಮಾತು (mātu), Tamil மாட்டு (māṭṭu).
