Related to పొలమరి (polamari, “cultivator.”) Cognate with Tamil புலவு (pulavu, “Arable land.”), Tamil புலம்பன் (pulampaṉ, “Chief or lord of a maritime tract [probably originally 'chief of a village in the maritime tract'].”), Malayalam പുലം (pulaṁ, “Cornfield, place.”), Kannada ಪೊಲ (pola, “A plough-field; place, direction.”), Tulu ಪುಲ (pula, “Pasturage.”).
