From Sanskrit अहि (ahi, “snake”), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁ógʷʰis, *h₃égʷʰis (“snake”). Cognates include Ancient Greek ὄφις (óphis), Avestan 𐬀𐬲𐬌- (aži-) and Old Armenian իժ (iž).
