Etymology
Compound of అమ్ము (ammu, “selling”) + కడ (kaḍa, “place”); possibly originating from Proto-Dravidian (*am + *kaṭi). Cognate with Kannada ಅಂಗಡಿ (aṅgaḍi, “store, shop”), Tamil அங்காடி (aṅkāṭi, “market, bazaar”) and Malayalam അങ്ങാടി (aṅṅāṭi, “market”).
