Uncertain; possibly from either முளை (muḷai, “to sprout”)[1] or முள் (muḷ, “thorn”),[2][3] from Proto-Dravidian *muḷ (“thorn”). Likely cognate with Sanskrit मुलाली (mulālī́, “lotus”), Pali muḷāla, muḷālī (“lotus root”).[4]
