From Proto-Dravidian [Term?]. Cognate with Telugu నారంగము (nāraṅgamu), Malayalam നാരങ്ങ (nāraṅṅa)), Kannada ನಾರಂಗಿ (nāraṅgi). Compare also Sanskrit नारङ्ग (nāraṅga), a Dravidian borrowing.
