Learned borrowing from Sanskrit प्रजापति (prajāpati, “lord of creatures”), with semantic shift (as butterflies were considered to be the most beautiful insects due to their appearance). Compare semantically Bengali প্রজাপতি (projapoti, “butterfly”) and Gujarati પ્રજાપતિ (prajāpti, “a type of worm, bug”).
