Borrowed from Urdu پاکستان (pākistān). Coined by Choudhry Rahmat Ali as an acronym of Punjab, "Afghania", Kashmir, Sindh and Balochistan. The name is also analyzed as پاک (pāk, “pure”) +‎ ـستان (-stān, “land”).
