Inherited from Old Gujarati नुमु (numu), from Prakrit *𑀡𑀯𑀫-𑀕 (*ṇavama-ga), from Sanskrit नवमक (navamaka), from नवम (navamá) + -क (-ka). By surface analysis, નવ (nav) + -મું (-mũ). Cognate with Hindustani نَواں (navā̃) / नवाँ (navā̃), Marathi नव्वा (navvā), Odia ନୌଆ (nôua), Punjabi ਨੌਵਾਂ (nauvā̃).
