Etymology

An Indo-Aryan innovation, derived from Arabic شُكْر‎ (šukr, “thankfulness, gratitude”, the verbal noun of شَكَرَ‎ (šakara, “to thank”)) + ـِيَّة‎ (-iyya). Compare Bengali শুকরিয়া (śukriẏa), Dhivehi ޝުކުރިއްޔާ‎ (šukuriyyā), Hindi शुक्रिया (śukriyā)/Urdu شُکْرِیَہ‎ (śukriya) (see Arabic شُكْر‎ (šukr) for all cognates).

Not borrowed from Arabic شُكْرِيَّة‎ (šukriyya) nor from Persian شکریه‎ (šokriyye), which don't have such meanings.
