Inherited from Early Assamese বহিনী (bohinī), *ভৈনী (bhoinī), from Magadhi Prakrit *𑀪𑁃𑀡𑀻 (*bhaiṇī), Magadhi Prakrit *𑀩𑀳𑀺𑀡𑀻 (*bahiṇī), from Sanskrit ভগিনী (bhaginī). Cognate with Kamta বৈনী (boini), Bengali বোন (bōn), Sylheti ꠜꠂꠘ (bóino), Odia ଭଉଣୀ (bhôuṇi), Hindi बहन (bahan).
