Inherited from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀯𑀺𑀚𑁆𑀚𑀼𑀮𑀺𑀅 (vijjulia), from earlier *𑀯𑀺𑀚𑁆𑀚𑀼𑀮𑀬𑀺𑀆 (*vijjulayiā) from Sanskrit विद्युल्लतिका (vidyullatikā, forked lightning), composed of विद्युत् (vidyut, lightning) + लतिका (latikā, creeper, vine, liana), with the shape of the lightning being compared to a creeper.[1] Cognate with Hindi बिजली (bijlī). Partial doublets are বিদ্যুৎ (biddut) and লতিকা (lotika).
