খোকা
Bengali
Etymology
From earlier খুকি (khuki, “infant, baby”), with metathesized consonants from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀓𑀼𑀓𑁆𑀔𑀺 (kukkhi), from Sanskrit कुक्षि (kukṣi, “belly, womb”), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *kuṭṣíṣ, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *kućšíš, possibly an old derivation of Proto-Indo-European *kuḱis (“belly; vulva”); with a semantic shift from "belly" > "womb" > "infant" > "baby, child" (for another similar development, see child).
