Etymology
From Proto-Indo-European *ster-íh₂s, from *ster- (“sterile, barren”). Cognate with Latin sterīlis, Ancient Greek στεῖρα (steîra, “barren woman; cow that has not calved”), Old Armenian ստերջ (sterǰ, “sterile”).
