From Proto-Indo-European *ster-íh₂s, from *ster- (sterile, barren). Cognate with Latin sterīlis, Ancient Greek στεῖρα (steîra, barren woman; cow that has not calved), Old Armenian ստերջ (sterǰ, sterile).
