Alternative scripts

Etymology

From Proto-Indo-Aryan *śūcī́-, and cognate with Persian سوزن (suzan, needle); the palatal fricative ś was changed to an alveolar s, perhaps from contamination with स्यू (syū, alternative form of सिव् (siv, to sew)). The Indo-Aryan root is further derived from Proto-Indo-European *ḱeh₃- (to sharpen), and connected with शूल (śūla, lance, stake); see there for more cognates.
