Etymology
From Proto-Indo-Aryan *śūcī́-, and cognate with Persian سوزن (suzan, “needle”); the palatal fricative ś was changed to an alveolar s, perhaps from contamination with स्यू (syū, “alternative form of सिव् (siv, “to sew”)”). The Indo-Aryan root is further derived from Proto-Indo-European *ḱeh₃- (“to sharpen”), and connected with शूल (śūla, “lance, stake”); see there for more cognates.
