From Proto-Indo-Iranian *saptá, from Proto-Indo-European *septḿ̥. Cognate with Avestan 𐬵𐬀𐬞𐬙𐬀 (hapta), Persian هفت (haft), Latin septem, Ancient Greek ἑπτά (heptá), and Old English seofon (whence English seven).

      प्र स॒प्तस॑प्त त्रे॒धा हि च॑क्र॒मुः प्र सृत्व॑रीणा॒मति॒ सिन्धु॒रोज॑सा॥
      prá sú va āpo mahimā́namuttamáṃ kārúrvocāti sádane vivásvataḥ.
      prá saptásapta tredhā́ hí cakramúḥ prá sṛ́tvarīṇāmáti síndhurójasā.
      Waters, the worshipper addresses to you excellent praise in the dwelling of the instrumental tutor of the rite;they flowed by sevens through the three worlds; but the Sindhu surpasses all the other streams in strength.
