Etymology
Originally the instrumental plural of an unattested *शन (śana, “quiet, calm, soft”), suggested to be either from Proto-Indo-European *ḱEn- or from the same root as Proto-Iranian *san- (“to mount, ascend”). In the latter case, the Iranian verb is of uncertain origin, and may be borrowed from the BMAC substrate.
