A thematicized form of Proto-Indo-European *wéh₁itis (that which bends; a branch or a slender woody stem). Cognate with Latin vītis, Ancient Greek ἰτέα (itéa), English withe, Avestan 𐬬𐬀𐬉𐬙𐬌 (vaēti). Also see वेत्र (vetra).
