Etymology

Two explanations for the name are:

  • From an abbreviation of विवेष्टि (viveṣṭi, to work) + क्रम (krama, path, stride), meaning "worker's stride". For the first element, see Proto-Indo-European *weys- (to produce). This is the more accepted etymology.
  • From a shortening of विक्रान्त (vikrānta, victorious) + रमा (ramā, Rama), meaning "victorious Rama." For the first element see Proto-Indo-European *weyk-.
