Inherited from Old Marathi विंचु (viṃcu), विंचू (viṃcū), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀯𑀺𑀘𑁆𑀘𑀼 (viccu), from Sanskrit वृश्चिक (vṛścika). Cognate with Hindi बिच्छू (bicchū), Assamese বিছা (bisa, “hairy caterpillar”).
