Etymology
From Proto-Indo-Aryan *wálśas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *wálćas.[1] Cognate with Avestan 𐬬𐬀𐬭𐬆𐬯𐬀 (varəsa, “hair (on the head)”), Proto-Slavic *volsъ (“hair”), Old Persian [script needed] (vars), Persian گرس (gors, “curled hair”), Lithuanian valaĩ. Compare also perhaps Sanskrit वृक्ष (vṛkṣa, “tree”).[2]
