Etymology

Of uncertain origin.

Traditionally derived from Proto-Indo-European *welH- (to turn, wind, roll), per Pokorny.[1] However, later linguists such as Mayrhofer and Persson reject this etymology, preferring to link the word with either वल् (val, to turn round) or to Dravidian; compare Tamil வளை (vaḷai, to bend).
