Inherited from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀫𑀼𑀲𑁆𑀲𑁆- (*muss-, “smile, sob”) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓𑁆𑀓- (-kka-), from Sanskrit मुस्र (musra, “a tear”), possibly further from अश्रु (aśru, “a tear”).
