Etymology
From Proto-Indo-European *mey- (“to lessen, small, little”). Cognate with Lithuanian menkas (“negligible”), Russian меньше (menʹše, “less”); Ancient Greek μόνος (mónos, “alone”) whence English mono-; Latin minuō whence English minute, diminish, etc.; Latin minus, minor, minimum.
