From Proto-Indo-Aryan *máźʰas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *máȷ́ʰas, from Proto-Indo-European *méǵh₂-os ~ *méǵh₂-es-, from *méǵh₂s (big, great). Cognate with Avestan 𐬨𐬀𐬰𐬀𐬵 (mazah, word), Ancient Greek μέγας (mégas), Latin magnus, Albanian madh (large, big).[1]
