Etymology 1
Probably of substrate origin; compare Tamil மண்டி (maṇṭi, “dregs”). Indo-European etymologies have been proposed, but are difficult to verify; compare Sanskrit मृज् (mṛj, “to wipe, purify”) and Lithuanian blandùs (“foggy; thick”).
