Borrowed from Northwestern Indo-Aryan (whence Punjabi ਮੱਖਣ (makkhaṇ)), from Prakrit 𑀫𑀓𑁆𑀔𑀡 (makkhaṇa), from Sanskrit म्रक्षण (mrakṣaṇa). Largely displaced native माखन (mākhan) outside of the expression माखन-चोर (mākhan-cor), an epithet of Krishna.
