From Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀪𑁄𑀮 (bhola), from a family of Indic words with "defective" connotations shared with Sanskrit बुल्व (bulva, “oblique, awry”). Cognate with Nepali भोलो (bholo), Punjabi ਭੋਲਾ (bholā) / بھولا (bholā), Sindhi ڀورو / भोरो, Gujarati ભોળું (bhoḷũ), Marathi भोळे (bhoḷe).
