Borrowed from Northwestern Indo-Aryan (whence ਬੁੱਢਾ (buḍḍhā)), from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀯𑀼𑀟𑁆𑀠 (vuḍḍha), from Ashokan Prakrit 𑀯𑀼𑀠 (vuḍha /⁠vuḍḍha⁠/), from Sanskrit वृद्ध (vṛddhá). Doublet of बूढ़ा (būṛhā), the native equivalent.
